![]() Jen Statsky had written the episode this year when Trey and Abbi have sort of an accidental kiss, and it just felt like Abbi and Trey bizarrely make sense together. That was a pretty significant Trey episode. The one exception is last week’s episode, “B&B-NYC.” I typically don’t write the episodes Trey is in. What’s interesting is that most of the episodes I’m in, Abbi and Ilana have written those episodes. ![]() Yeah, as the writers have gotten to live with these characters now for three seasons, we’ve gotten to expand their voices.ĭo you think that because you end up writing for yourself sometimes. A lot of shows will have a character fill an archetype and stick to that, and one of the things I’ve been really excited about, that Broad City’s been able to do, has been to take someone who’s been a source for jokes, and a source of angst for Abbi, and made him into someone who the audience sympathizes with and actually likes. And like I said, he’s a well-intentioned, good guy, but he’s sort of been a vehicle for jokes, and it’s really exciting to go deeper with him. ![]() He’s this relentlessly enthusiastic, upbeat trainer and, you know, if you go to a gym, if you go to an Equinox or something, that person exists. What are some ways your character has evolved that have surprised you?Ī lot of people know a Trey. I think this is kind of a natural evolution. He just doesn’t realize that he can be annoying, but his intentions are always good. As far as Trey, he’s always cared for Abbi. Their relationship just kind of evolved, and this season in particular we’ve been able to evolve the world, to expand the world around Abbi and Ilana. No, I don’t think any of us envisioned that. Was the intention always to have Abbi and Trey become an item? We caught up with Downs to talk about Trey and Abbi’s surprising compatibility, putting funny first, and kissing babies. Downs is having quite a moment - not only does the comedian play Abbi’s boss and now love interest Trey on Broad City (for which he’s also a writer, along with longtime girlfriend-slash-writing-partner Lucia Aniello), he was also just featured on Netflix’s The Characters. Season 5 is slated to premiere in early 2019.Paul W. “Broad City’s” fourth season concluded in December. She’s the co-creator of a series in development at Amazon that’s inspired by 1992 baseball classic “A League of Their Own.” “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” and “BoJack Horseman” are among her other acting credits. It’s not exclusive and doesn’t include film.īesides “Broad City,” Glazer has appeared in “Rough Night,” “The Night Before,” and Comedy Central mini-series “Time Traveling Bong.” Jacobson is earning excellent reviews for her dramatic turn in Marja-Lewis Ryan’s newly released Netflix addiction drama “6 Balloons.” The pic premiered at SXSW earlier this year. Glazer and Jacobson’s deal “will allow them to develop projects across Viacom’s television portfolio,” according to the source. Both Glazer and Jacobson are serving as executive producers on the former two projects and Glazer will EP “Platinum Status.” ![]() The potential series are “Mall Town USA,” an animated portrait of a 13-year-old girl going through puberty, “Young Professionals,” a look into the lives of five Washington-based housemates involved in politics, and “Platinum Status,” a live-action story about a gay man who hooks up with a woman after his long-term boyfriend dumps him. The three projects in Comedy Central’s pipeline from Glazer and/or Jacobson are neither written by nor starring the duo. We are very excited to bring new voices and points of view to Comedy Central and continue our collaboration together in new ways,” they emphasized. “‘Broad City’s’ always had a spontaneous pace and feeling, and ending after season five honors that spirit. It’s been a phenomenal experience, and we’ve put ourselves into it completely,” the pair said in a statement. “‘Broad City’ has been our baby and first love for almost 10 years, since we started as a web series. The pact includes Glazer and Jacobson together as well as individually. Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson have signed a new first-look deal with Comedy Central parent company Viacom and already have three projects in development. It’s not all bad news, though - the creators and stars of the stoner comedy will continue to collaborate. “Broad City’s” previously announced fifth season on Comedy Central will be its last, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. Ilana and Abbi’s New York City adventures are coming to a close.
